The
artical I chose to write about covers a recent instance of homicide. A woman
that has a religious background that is not as widely accepted as others is
being persecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The woman in question is a
Wiccan or a Witch. She is accused of murdering a man in the forest as a part of
a Wiccan ritual. In reality she was celebrating the Pagan holiday of Beltane. Beltane
is a peaceful homage to spring known as the time of "no time". The
article paints a certain picture of the alleged murder. The article is written
as if trying to convey an opinion to the reader; that Angela "the
suspect" is guilty. It is made apparent in this article that although the
witch trials are long over, some still love to paint a certain picture of
someone while violating their right to privacy.
I have no comment on the state of the accused; I
will not be giving an opinion on her guilt. I was taught that everyone is due a
fair trial, and guilt must be proved or admitted. What I will be giving my
opinion on is the sheer lack of discretion in the article. The article includes
full names, witness accounts, and locations. A link to Angela’s mug shot was
included until it was taken down which begs the question why then is so much
information given in this instance? Could it be that a suspected criminal is
openly practicing a religion that is not widely accepted? The modern exploitation
of individuals in less than ideal legal circumstances has proved to be able to
sway public opinion. Take OJ Simpson for example this issue has polarized society
for decades since. He went from the American dream to the perfect PR nightmare
after a news article.
