I think that in today’s social construct where you live has less of an effect on who you are thanks to social networking and the internet. When
I was younger my neighborhood friends and I developed our own localized micro-culture
that reflected our wider interest mainly- extreme sports. We all went to
different schools or were at different levels, so who and how we interacted at
school may have been completely different. As I grew older I moved to more
suburban areas it was the reverse, I was
affected by who I hung out with at school and I had next to no interactions
with people my age in my neighborhood. I went to school outside of my district
so my friends lived in similar neighborhoods on the other side of town. After a couple of years social media like
Xanga and MySpace created even wider networks for me to interact with globally.
I expanded my taste in music because my friends from all over the world would put
their favorite songs on their pages. I was
obsessed with street style blogs(image above) before it became a big trend so how I dressed
was influenced by trends in Japan or Manchester rather than what was big at the
mall. After some time the entertainment industry began to reflect this global social
interaction with artists collaborating with Japanese design houses like the Pharell
Williams B.A.P.E. Nigo collaboration. My interest in counter culture has set me
apart because I am not limited geographically or by time. I was as equally obsessed
with the movements that took place in America during the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s
while fashion drew influence from the 80’s toward the end of my high school
career. I would have to say I am definitely who I am despite where I grew up
and despite when or what era I grew up.
